GXS TradeWeb

GXS TradeWeb is a forms-based EDI service that enables anyone in the World Wide Web (WWW) community to trade business documents using forms available from a WWW page, and to conduct two way electronic commerce with other GXS subscribers and sponsors. In fact, many trading partners agree to trading via their VAN and/or via TradeWeb. All the traditionally complicated back-end EDI mapping and translating services are hidden and transparent to you, the WWW user. Introduced with the ANSI standard format, TradeWeb will enable trading under ANSI ASC X12, EDIFACT, TRADACOMS and VICS standards. Once you've registered for the GXS TradeWeb Service, you will have an EDI Mailbox and access to business form templates and GXS TradeWeb Directory. All three service components are accessible from the GXS TradeWeb site.

GXS TradeWeb Directory

A directory (like the Yellow Pages) of all Trading Partners with whom you can trade electronically. The GXS TradeWeb Directory includes the Company Profile of every subscriber and sponsor of the GXS TradeWeb Service and can be accessed from the GXS TradeWeb site. Typically, you will trade with a subset of the trading partners in the directory and keep their address information in your Personal Directory, similar in many ways to your personal address book.

Generic Community

The GXS TradeWeb Generic Community is an Open Community, that is, one that requires no access code. All subscribers are automatic members of this community and each subscriber can exchange GXS TradeWeb generic EDI documents with any other GXS TradeWeb subscriber.

Group Community

An unrestricted collection of trading partners who have agreed among themselves to freely exchange EDI documents with each other using pre-approved EDI forms, standards, information categories and processes. A Hub sponsor may or may not be present.

Used in GXS TradeWeb to store messages sent between trading partners.

Mapping

The act of determining what pieces of information in the company's database should be placed into each data element of an EDI document or transaction set. In reverse, it determines what data elements of an EDI document or transaction set should be placed into the company's database. Mapping is done as part of the translation software development.

The sample (in English only) ANSI X12 Envelope structure helps graphically explain these EDI concepts.

Message

In EDI, a message is a predefined group of segments that contain data related to a particular business activity. For example, an Invoice.

Monthly Transaction Period

In GXS TradeWeb, the Monthly Transaction Period runs from the 21st of the previous month, regardless of when you subscribed to the service, to the 20th of the current month. This is the period used to determine your monthly usage. For monthly subscribers, this is also the period covered by your monthly fee.

The Monthly Transaction Period is the same as the Billing Period.
