Return

Also known as Turnaround, return is a feature that lets you respond to an incoming document, automatically filling the return document with data from the original document. For example, GXS TradeWeb lets you return Purchase Orders. You can create a Purchase Order Acknowledgment or Invoice by replying to, or returning, an incoming Purchase Order. Much of the information on the return message is automatically filled from the original Purchase Order.

SIC Code

A SIC code is a Standard Industrial Classification code, assigned by the Small Business Administration, which identifies the type of industry your business operates in. Your business or organization may be associated with more than one SIC code.

Segment

A combination of related Data Elements.

The sample (in English only) ANSI X12 Envelope structure helps graphically explain these EDI concepts.

Service Provider

Refers to the company that provides your external communications for electronic trading. Traditionally this has been a VAN (Value Added Network) provider such as GXS Information Services. The term also refers to providers of Internet access (i.e., Internet Service Provider or ISP). This could be your phone company or any of a number of local providers in your area.

Sponsor

In GXS TradeWeb, this is generally a member of the GXS EDI trading community who has agreed to accept messages from GXS TradeWeb subscribers. Sponsors are usually part of a closed community and may request closed trading in GXS TradeWeb. In such cases, subscribers must have approval (and an access code) from the sponsor before messages can be exchanged.

Standards and versions

A system of file rules that is agreed upon by all Trading Partners and that provides commonly agreed upon formats for virtually every type of business communication. A standard is used to translate paper documents into a "standard" file format that can be communicated electronically and read by machine. Today there are three standards, each with multiple versions available. These are ANSI ASC X12 (the U.S. standard), EDIFACT (the International standard), and TRADACOMMS (a United Kingdom based standard).
